Q: How long will it take me to become reasonably proficient?

A: The time it takes to become proficient varies with each individual depending on the effort they put forth. At Brandywine Martial Arts Academy, students are very often amazed by their own ability and accomplishment in as little as three to six months. This training will give you the confidence of knowing that you can defend yourself in most situations. Your real goal, however, should be to attain the rank of Black Belt. This level of proficiency typically takes about three to four years. Once again, however, this will vary depending on your level of effort and commitment.

Q: Will there be other beginners in my class?

A: At Brandywine Martial Arts Academy, students will train primarily with other students of the same rank and general age. Beginners are no different. Your first week or two of classes will be spent with other beginners learning the basics. Beginners are welcome at any time and frequently get one-on-one training with the instructor for their first classes.

Q: How many classes per week should I attend?

A: It is recommended that you participate in classes twice per week, plus a certain amount of practice time in between classes as a good level of training. This allows the student time to work on material between classes and become proficient before new concepts are introduced.

Q: Will my classes be safe?

A: Yes. All classes taught are strictly monitored by the instructors to ensure complete safety.

Q: What about sparring?

A: All students interested in sparring are required to wear protective equipment (head, foot, and hand gear, mouthguard, and protective cup for boys) and are strictly supervised. All sparring activity is monitored by the instructors.

Q: Are there any age limits?

A: Anyone over the age of 5 is welcome to join. Young children will train in a separate group, but may also train with the older students. There is no upper age limit. As many senior citizen black belts have shown, it is never too late to start.

Q: Will the martial arts make my child overly aggressive?

A: Children are taught that the martial arts are not to be used as an offensive weapon, but rather to defend oneself in certain situations. Aggressive behavior is channeled into assertiveness to increase the child's self esteem, increase self discipline and build character. Our program also helps the shy child to develop self confidence and become more assertive.

Q: Will I learn useful self defense?

A: Absolutely. Practical self defense is an important part of this complete Martial Art. How to roll, fall, break out of a hold, joint locks and manipulation, and how to defend against weapons are some of the aspects of self defense taught for real life situations.

Q: Do I have to be an athlete to train?

A: No. Everyone trains at his or her own level. If you are not used to hard physical training, that's fine. You will find that your strength, endurance, and flexibility increase steadily as you work out. If you are a conditioned athlete however, don't worry, you will get a good workout. We welcome students of all backgrounds and abilities. People who are physically challenged are encouraged to join. Tang Soo Do is very much a personal art.

Q: Do I need any experience?

A: No previous experience in the martial arts is required. All you need is the desire to learn. However, we welcome students of any martial arts background.

Q: Do I Have to Buy a Uniform?

A: No. When you complete your registration with Brandywine Martial Arts Academy, you will be issued a uniform - complete with the proper patches and stenciling.
